Khambatta Dance Company
About
Khambatta Dance Company’s (KDC) mission is to connect artists and audiences through the exploration of contemporary issues, emotionally resonant performances, and a collaborative process of dance creation, reaching out to the community in an inclusive manner. Through its signature program, the Seattle International Dance Festival (SIDF), the Company seeks to unify communities annually showcasing the work of over 150 local, regional and international dance artists and over 40 dance groups who exemplify the diversity of contemporary dance practices and the richness of human experience.
KDC was incorporated in New York in 1993 and moved to Seattle in 2001. Since then, its programming has reached over 85,000 people including works ranging from site-specific pieces to staged, full-length multidisciplinary productions, to commissions for government functions and other events. During this time, it has focused on making its work accessible to a wider audience through free, outdoor performances supported by local businesses and community organizations, presenting to a Seattle audience of 5,000 annually.
KDC tours nationally and internationally, intentionally cultivating networks of support with other dance artists. In the five years prior to covid, it toured to Brazil, Germany, India, Lithuania, Mexico, Singapore, as well as on the East and West Coast of the US. Its work has been presented by venues such as the Spoleto Festival USA, Choreographic Center of Tours (France), the Vancouver International Dance Festival, the National Center for the Performing Arts (Mumbai), the San Francisco International Arts Festival, Gonzaga University (Spokane), and Western Washington University (Bellingham) among many others. SIDF which is currently in its 17th year, added a Winter Showcase in 2018 to create more year-round opportunities for local and international artists to connect and present work.
Through the James Ray Residency Program (2017-2022), KDC supports the work of Seattle-area dance artists through a year-long program of free rehearsal space, tailored professional development consulting and a fully-produced performance.
In response to the Covid pandemic, KDC has adapted to continue to provide its programs. It produced SIDF 2020 in a free/low-cost virtual platform serving over 2,000 local dancers and audience members, while SIDF 2021 returned in a hybrid virtual / live format, with an even stronger focus on community-building, with local dance non-profits from across Seattle each curating an evening of performance, during which the festival hosted several virtual meet-ups for local dance artists and funders. KDC has also continuned to keep its dancers engaged during this time, producing several dance films, a community-oriented project in South Lake Union bringing dance and focus to area sculptural works, and a live presentation at the Newport Dance Festival in Rhode Island, presented in the lull between covid-induced restrictions. Its commitment has continued unabated to both our community and its mission.
